In June 2025, the moon will hang lower in the sky than it has in nearly two decades. It's called the Major Lunar Standstill—and it won’t happen again until 2043! It’s the kind of rare celestial event that sends astrologers into tailspins and anime kids outside with long-exposure film cameras and cheap tripods. But it also means we all get the astrological license to get emo and turn into mooney’s ourselves!
So obviously, we’re celebrating. With moon-core everything. Media, snacks, comics, retro games, and one perfect anime that’s already howling— there’s nothing like taking some time to bathe in the cool blue light of our closest friend and welcome the spirit of a quiet summer evening with our eyes on the grinning cheese-wheel emerging over the horizon. Let’s begin:
What to Watch: Wolf’s Rain
This one’s required- but be warned- it’s bleak. It’s poetic. It’s a mythic end-of-the-world road trip told through wolves with human boy’s souls trying to find a place Paradise far from the wreckage of the human world where they live… a utopian dreamland which may or may not be on the moon. The soundtrack by Yoko Kanno alone will make you want to ascend.
What to Play: To The Moon
A short, heartbreaking pixel RPG about memory, love, and regret—told through a team of scientists who help people relive dreams on their deathbed. It’s not about the moon. But it feels like the moon. Melancholy, shining, and very far away. This one sinks in. And after years of waiting- it’s now available on PS5.

What to Read: Moon Knight: From the Dead (2014, Lemire/Ellis run)
A surreal, fragmented trip through identity, mythology, and moon-god madness. Lemire spins a tale that skips the Disney+ gloss and keeps you grounded for a journey into the mind of multiple-personality disorder. A treat if you like your capes with some chaos and your panels with more negative space than comfort.

What to Snack On: The Morinaga Moonlight Cookie (or basically any Mooncakes)
Track down a Japan Crate with some soft, fresh seasonal mochi, dig into a classic box of Morinaga (or just grab the mooncakes from your local Daiso.) Anything round, sticky, and tied to ancient lunar mythology will do. Bonus round: (grab the white chocolate and marshmallows- these make sick vanilla s’mores in a moonlit fire pit.)
What to Remember: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (2001, GBA)
Moons spell nostalgia and the most slept-on of the early GBA Castlevanias was undoubtedly Circle of the Moon. Dark, atmospheric, and full of soft-lit vampire drama. Plug in your handheld and let that weird chiptune organ take you there. Available, fully restored in the Advance Collection.
What to listen to: “Moon” from Turn A Gundam (Yoko Kanno)
Ethereal, fragile, alien. This isn’t your dad’s Gundam music. It’s waltzcore for astronauts who cry.
Final Word:
The moon won’t be this close, this low, or this mystical again for another two decades- celebrate the moment like it’s the anime finale of your weird little life arc. Take pictures. Eat something round. Watch something beautiful. And howl a little, yeah?
