Let’s get this out of the way: there is no product called “Aura 1” from Neural DSP. I looked. I searched their official product page, their news archive, every major music tech publication I could find, and came up empty. The name appears nowhere in any announcement, press release, or leak. It is, as of today, a ghost.
And yet the phrase “Neural DSP Aura 1” has been bouncing around production forums and gear communities for weeks, tethered to a provocative claim: that it would somehow render sample clearance obsolete. The implication being that a company known for modeling guitar amplifiers was about to drop an AI tool that would let producers generate any sound they wanted, bypassing the entire legal apparatus of sampling.
It’s a compelling fantasy. I’d argue it’s also completely wrong about what Neural DSP does, what sample clearance actually is, and where AI in music is genuinely headed.
What Neural DSP Actually Builds
Neural DSP Technologies is a Finnish audio equipment manufacturer and software developer founded in 2017 by Douglas Castro and Francisco Cresp, headquartered in Punavuori, Helsinki, best known for its flagship guitar amp modeler, the Quad Cortex, and for its audio plug-ins that create computer-based virtual amplifier and effects modelling suites. That’s it. Guitar amps. Bass rigs. Effects chains. They expanded beyond guitar and bass processing for the first time with Mantra, an all-in-one vocal processing plug-in released in 2025. But nothing in their product line touches sample-based music production, generative composition, or anything adjacent to the sample clearance pipeline.
What they do have is genuinely fascinating AI work, just not the kind people are imagining. In 2024, Neural revealed they had developed a robot known as a Telemetric Inductive Nodal Actuator, or TINA, that manually controls an amplifier being modeled and records and annotates the results to facilitate audio processing, in a combination of robotic data collection and machine learning. The company has used TINA in the development of all its products, claiming its use removes human bias for greater accuracy. As CEO Douglas Castro told Guitar World: “We’ve successfully removed all human intervention within the amplifier modeling process.” Their newest hardware, the Quad Cortex mini announced at NAMM 2026, delivers the same processing architecture, audio quality and Neural Capture technology as the original Quad Cortex in a significantly smaller enclosure. The unit reduces the hardware footprint by more than 50%.
In my view, this is some of the most interesting applied machine learning in audio right now. But it has zero to do with sampling, clearance, or generative music. Confusing TINA’s amp-modeling robotics with the AI tools that actually threaten sample clearance is like confusing a CNC lathe with a printing press because both involve machines.
What’s Actually Happening to Sample Clearance
The real pressure on traditional sample clearance isn’t coming from guitar companies in Helsinki. It’s coming from generative AI platforms, pre-clearance subscription services, and the major labels themselves quietly redrawing the map.
Start with Tracklib. Tracklib is a subscription service that gives producers access to songs and royalty-free sounds for sampling, with a fast-growing catalog of 100,000+ songs of all genres, from all over the world, released anytime between 1928 and 2024. Six years ago, Tracklib transformed the clearance process by offering sample clearances for as low as $50. Now, Tracklib has changed the game again by removing sample clearance fees completely for Premium and Max subscription plans. That’s a real structural shift. The old nightmare of tracking down rights holders, negotiating for months, and paying thousands is being quietly replaced by a monthly subscription cheaper than most streaming services.
Then there’s Suno, which is where the sample clearance conversation gets genuinely complicated. Suno is the most popular GenAI music service, with more than 100 million people having tried it, and is the most well-funded GenAI music startup, valued at $2.45 billion in its latest round. Warner Music Group became the first major label to strike a deal with Suno in November 2025, settling previous litigation between the companies. The agreement essentially forces Suno to retire its old models, which were trained on vast amounts of unlicensed data, and shift to systems trained on approved, licensed songs.
That deal is worth pausing on. Until recently, Suno’s policy stated plainly that subscribers owned the songs they generated. That language has now disappeared. The updated documentation takes a markedly different position: even when users are granted commercial use rights, they are “generally not considered the owner” of the songs, because the output is generated by Suno’s system. My take is that this is the opposite of liberation. The “death of sample clearance” crowd imagines a world where AI frees producers from copyright entirely. What’s actually emerging is a new licensing regime, not the absence of one.
The Anxiety Underneath
So why did a phantom product from a guitar amp company become a vessel for sample clearance panic? I think the answer is simpler than the technology. The global AI in Music market is projected to reach approximately USD 38.7 billion by 2033, from USD 3.9 billion in 2023, at a CAGR of 25.8%. 82% of music listeners can’t tell the difference between music made by humans and AI. 77% of people are concerned that AI-generated music doesn’t appropriately credit the original artists. Those numbers create a particular kind of dread. People feel the ground shifting and reach for the nearest narrative that explains it, even if the narrative is wrong.
In gear forums and production communities, a recurring sentiment captures it well: veteran producers who grew up chopping vinyl on MPCs describe feeling obsolete as AI stem separation and generative tools erase the constraints that once defined their craft. One long-time beatmaker put it plainly in a discussion I encountered: after three decades of sampling, AI had made him feel like his skills no longer mattered. Others push back, insisting that AI might replicate what a producer can do, but never what a specific producer would do.
I’d argue both sides are right, which is exactly why the conversation is so charged. The tools are changing. The legal frameworks are changing. The economics are changing. But the impulse to pin all of that change on a single product, a single company, a single “death” moment, is a misread of how technology actually moves through culture. It doesn’t arrive as a bomb. It seeps in like weather.
What Actually Deserves Your Attention

In 2026, Suno will make several changes to the platform, including launching new, more advanced and licensed models. When the new models launch, the current models will be deprecated. Moving forward, downloading audio will require a paid account. Watch whether Universal and Sony follow with similar agreements. Watch Tracklib’s expansion into bespoke clearance for major-label deals. Major artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Kaytranada have previously released songs featuring Tracklib samples.
And yes, watch Neural DSP too. Castro and Cresp credited TINA with the company’s ability to make up ground compared to their more established competitors. They’re doing genuinely novel things with machine learning applied to audio. But modeling the harmonic behavior of a Soldano SLO-100 is a profoundly different project than generating a clearance-free funk break. Conflating the two doesn’t just misunderstand Neural DSP. It misunderstands what makes sampling matter in the first place.
Sampling was never just about the sound. It was about the reference, the lineage, the act of reaching into someone else’s record and pulling out a piece of shared history. No robot, however precise, replaces that. No algorithm, however sophisticated, can generate the feeling of recognizing a Marvin Gaye vocal chop underneath a new beat. That’s not a technical problem. It’s a human one.
The “Aura 1” doesn’t exist. But the anxiety it represents is very real. The trick is making sure we aim it at the right targets.
